Seaport Dining

I wanted to take something that shows the people inside better, but I like this longer shot as well.

This is another version with people walking through. Cool effect if I knew how to take advantage of it.

Artist as art

For at least a moment, tourists on the steps of Federal Hall found something other than the Stock Exchange and the statue of Washington to look at.

For some reason I both like and dislike this photo. I like that it looks like Washington is praying to the painter. I like the color of the light in the arches on the right and how it matches the color of the easel. I don't like that the photo isn't a little sharper, and I'm having a real problem figuring the compositional balance. Are the arches on the right as heavy as all those linear steps on the left? My eye doesn't know what to when it looks at this.

Red Saturday

Of course, what follows Black Friday but Red Saturday - the day when boxes full of Christmas clutter are spread around the house, putting at least one red object on every surface.

Verrazano

Black Friday

How crowded was Herald Square on Friday afternoon?

Usually I'd junk most of these, but I really like all the faces in them so I kept them all. I know they're a little rich, I'm still practicing with the Photoshop. I'll get it eventually.

(How many undercover cops do you think there are in the fifth photo?)

(And how great an idea would it be to make 34th Street a pedestrian promenade from 7th ave to 5th ave on big shopping days?)

Happy Thanksgiving

I may have a bit of a series here if I add it to this and this. Meanwhile, I was too food-addled to take a picture of my cheesecake and coffee and I just plain forgot to take a shot of the soup course. P.S. The wine in photo two was god-awful, though it works well in the photo I think.

Cupping Room, West Broadway last Saturday just as it was starting to really rain.

Rolling

The other thing I learned this weekend is that when the light isn't working well for color and color isn't an important part of the composition, that's a good time to go to black and white. And thus, my favorite shot of the weekend. No Photoshopping the blue/yellow in this one.

Only in New York does a guy rolling cigars sit on the other side of the wall from a guy making sushi rolls. I was thinking of cropping this down to just the windows, but I also like how that alley came out on the left.

Nap

I love this photo and I'm looking forward to more in-the-window shots as it gets darker earlier, but I'm still wrestling with the problem of this camera's auto light filter. It's the old blue on the outside, yellow on the inside problem. Heretofore I've not done anything to any of the photos other than the occasional crop. This is my first effort at using Photoshop to tweak the color. Below is what it looked like pre-tweak. So orange it's silly. The top photo is not quite perfect, but at least I'm not embarrassed to display it.

Stocking

Last in today's reconstruction series is the Amish Market, destroyed on 9/11, moved to the end of the world (could there be a worse location?) and now about to open in a huge space on West Broadway. It's been sitting for what seems like forever, but now they're finally starting to stock the shelves and clean it up.

Canal Street Park

Someone could probably do a regular blog just on Lower Manhattan construction, and I'm not volunteering, but since this one is significant to me (I pass it every morning) and progress is impressive I'm giving this intermediate set. I'll probably do another round when the park is done.

Look at all those empty pots. Sheesh.
What isn't in the photo is the pungent stench of fertilizer. If these plants die, it won't be for lack of good soil.

Downtown Express has more details on the park.

George's update

Time for the weekly look at progress on what we hope will be the new diner across the street. Lookin' good.

They also have the beginnings of the wall up on Rector Street side. For the life of me I can't figure out why the camera insisted on turning this photo blue.

These are the right colors, wrong focus. I'll try to get a better one tomorrow for the record.

Pattern

The new Photo Friday challenge is patterns.

Tree

I took these pieces when I was out in Seattle in September. I've been meaning to put them together to see if it looks like anything.

Lights

Giovani's Atrium always has lights on that little tree (the way Italian restaurants alwasy do) and now 7 world trade has lights that look like the building was decorated in the same manner.

I had considered cropping it to just the tree and building, but I also like how the light from the parking garage works into this shot.

VanaV

In front of the Vancouver Art Museum. There were a few like this, cars welded together in weird ways.

Blue Bunny

I'm looking for some good summery photos so I'm not posting all darkness shots. This says Blue Bunny on the stick. It's from this past summer when it was so hot all you had to do was drop your ice cream on the street and it was an instant puddle (except for the bubble gum eyes).

I am determined to keep taking pictures even though it's dark by the time I get home from work.

Balloons

This balloon shop is a TriBeCa icon and a mainstay of NYC street photography. It's probably been in a million movies -not to mention photoblogs. I'm not too pleased with the lighting of these, so I sort of think of this as a first draft.

Construction

These photos are related because the construction scene on top is the building with the crane on it in the bottom picture. I think it's called the Avalon Chrystie Place.
