I finally went and looked for where the Trader Joe's is going because everything I've read says it's near Union Square and I couldn't think of where there was space for it on Union Square. It'd be more accurate to say that it's at 14th and 3rd Ave, not really Union Square. The pictures above are what you see when you peek through the window. Looks close to finished.
The picture below is just a few steps after taking the above shots I find two Fresh Direct trucks. I imagine their business will get a little slower on this block.

hey, is that fair to say it's "underwhelming at this point?" without the counters, racks, crowds, low cost trader joe's brand stuff? i bet most of the hot new clubs and restaurants looked similarly drab two weeks before opening day.

tmp00 - what's so bad about the chain? the fact that it carries all-natural ingrediets? the fact that they promote sustainable energy? the fact that they sell high-quality, low-fat goods at great value?
i walk 2 miles to get groceries at wholefoods because my only other option is a key food that consistently smells of funky poultry and spilled beer.

Could be wrong, but I don't think that tmp00 was necessarily dissing TJ. Sounds like they were just making an L.A. insider observation, as these three west coast establishments seem to frequently have stores in close proximity to one another.
As for myself; I can't wait for them to open!
Sadly, one of the best parts of Trader Joe's is their booze section. NY's weird liquor laws won't allow them to sell that blessed cheap wine and beer. It's kinda like nachos without cheese...........
As I said, I may have to move out of Los Angeles.
First, all the vintage record stores close up (Rhino Records, Aron's), now New York has Trader Joes?

By the way, the stunning decor is NOT why people go to TJ's. In fact, the company plays up the dowdy/goofy nautical decor as part of their homely image. The staff all wear Hawaiian shirts, for God sakes. Decorwise, the place almost looks like a Hooters.
there will be a separate wine shop to get around the ny liquour laws- yay joe!
now all we need is an in & out burger and i'll never have to go to la again :-)
