Washington Square drummer - spotlight

I thought the severe winter sun was casting shadows on this guy like a stage spotlight, so I was trying to see if I could get something that looked more like a stage than than the middle of a park. Results in order of satifaction.

I have photos of this as a hole in the ground from several months ago. I'm not sure what the hold up was but it looks like it's off and running now.

Shepard Fairey blitz

It's probably not Shepard Fairey himself doing the posting, but lately there have been a lot of large Andre posters around Williamsburg. The first batch I saw were pretty quickly defaced, like this one:

But then these prettier ones started cropping up:

Here's the funny part. The building directly across from the construction, the building that's losing its river/sunset/skyline view to the new building has this sign posted:

I never heard of Kool Bloo, but I guess there's one on E23rd St. This one is on Varick and Broome. I'm pretty sure it's brand new because I don't remember seeing a big orange facade there and the signs all say "open 24 hours" but it's not open, so I'm thinking it's just not open yet.

The Classic Car Club of Manhattan

I pass this place all the time and findaly got around to checking it out. Another sign in the window says you can't buy these cars, or rent them, but you can drive them if you're a member of the club. The Classic Car Club of Manhattan.

They've got a little lounge area inside and a garage area as well. I'm not sure if members are allowed to work on their own personal classic cars in their or if it's all club cars. Strangely, no one seemed to care that I was walking around in there taking pictures and kicking tires.

Viper

Who in their right mind parks their Viper on the street?
061216 032

061216 034
Actually one answer might be, who in their right mind would give the keys to the Viper to a parking garage attendant? The real answer, though, I think, is that this is on Dominick St. right around the corner from the Classic Car Club of Manhattan. I'll make a separate post of those photos.

The old Restaurant 147
About a billion years ago I lived on 15th Street and the former firehouse was converted to a restaurant called 147. Later it became Man Ray and I think Johnny Depp owned it. I happened by there the other night and saw this for sale sign. The only news I can find about the space is this BlogChelsea post from back in April when there was an effort under way to put a high end Kosher place in there. I guess that didn't happen. Anyone know how long this For Sale sign has been in the window?

The crazy thing about this is that each letter is made from what appears to be a sheet of plywood. I guess it's a good way to put up something like this, but 15 sheets of plywood is a pretty big investment in something that could be taken down at any moment.

When I took those Chrysler Building pictures last week it was actually this building that I was looking for. On 42nd and pretty far east, it's got a hollow core and glass skin, so at night it's like looking at a giant cross section of an office building with a garden atruim at the bottom. Unfortunately a lot of the depth is lost in 2D, but I still like the shapes.

I was a little disappointed with what the switch to B&W did for this. Maybe I should have tweaked the contrast a little harder.

That corner spot at N8th and Wythe

OK, this is an embarrassingly poor shot, but I wanted to point out that there's a lot of work that's been done in there. If I can get a better one tonight I'll replace this. Looks like a lot of counter space. Maybe a coffee bar?

UPDATE:
N8th and Wythe
A good shot finally of progress on the interior of the space on the corner of N8th and Wythe in Northside. I don't see any indication of a name yet. It's bigger than I thought it was, running all the way back through the building and out into the yard out back. It's obviously a bar, you can see the taps are installed (no tap handles yet) and in the foreground are natural wood counters with some kind of shiny heavy laminate on them. The place looks good so far.

55 Berry gets a neighbor

IMG_7968
I assume this is a different building and not part of some complex. What has to be a bummer for 55 Berry residents is that the new structure is already taller than that roof-top common area. If they're lucky that deck will get a bit of setting sun but otherwise it looks like it's going to be pretty shady.

The fire experiment

My sister in law asked once how to take a picture of fire. While I do think it's possible to meter for the fire, that doesn't leave much light for the surrounding area. Below is a series of shots of a ritual they regularly perform outside the Buddhist Temple on Washington Street near Rector. They looked a little freaked out that I took so many pictures, but I got to try a variety of shutter speeds.
