Monsignor's closed!!

We noticed it was shuttered over Thanksgiving and a few days later the real estate sign went up. I have to assume the taco place that worked out of the back is also closed. That's a real shame. Now comes the time to hope/dread what goes in there. Will it be a cool place like some of the other corners of the park (Luncheonette, Mamalu, er... Turkey Nest) or will the Dunkin Donuts/Baskin Robins trend that just went in a block away spread to this corner with another chain restaurant?

Hasidim on the field

It never fails that when someone comes to visit they mention seeing Hasidic guys playing softball down the street. I stood and watched them play for a while and despite the fact that they play in collared shirts, they're about as normal as you can get. At one point the base runner going home ran around the catcher who was blocking the plate. The catcher didn't have the ball, but because the runner left the baseline, the defense argued that he was out. A screaming fight of passion and rage ensued, but in the end, it was just softball. As a consession, the runner went back to third and the game played on.

1954?

The color scheme makes me fear a Pizzeria Uno.
Above, looks like whatever goes here will have a brick oven.
Below is the lobby of the building. There are windows in the back where I can see natural light, so maybe there's a courtyard or something?
Below, view from the south so I could fit the whole building in.

Glass studio changes

Looks like the glass studio on Berry is getting a new door or maybe even a showcase window. Yesterday morning there was a window delivery truck out front and last night there was a big hole added there. I wonder if they're going to make a little store on there instead of that pile of pieces in the middle of the workshop like they usually have.
(I know they have a sign that says "no pictures" but I don't think this counts.)

Missed connection

At first I thought he was a spy. Then I thought they were looking for each other but didn't know what each other looked like so he was saying "I think I'm behind you on the bench." But then I thought he was a spy again and telling her, "Don't turn around. I'm right behind you. I've got the item right here in my bag."

I don't think they have a display case full of military patches up front

Weiss & Mahoney didn't close all that long ago, but somehow it feels like a million years ago. It's hard to imagine there ever being anything there but a chain store.

His queen in Queens

Check it out. While working on my new Flickr map for the next Curbed NeighborhoodWatch project I found a rooftop wedding proposal. (Click the image to see where it is on a Live.com map.)

They're baaaack

The weird thing is that I haven't seen any clean spots that they must be leaving behind. I almost wonder if they're around lately because of the movie shoot. They removed graffiti for American Gangster, so maybe for p.s. i love you too. I don't imagine the city would let the movie company remove the graffiti themselves.

Mind the gap

This is the pedestrian walk over the Pulaski Bridge that connects Greenpoint with Long Island City. In the middle, the two sides don't actually connect and when you stand with one foot on each side, you can feel them moving independently as cars pass over the bridge. If you look close, you can see the water below.
NYC Marathon Part 2

There was a water table and a Gatorade table. The football guys are Automotive High School's Pistons football team.
The people passing out water scream, "WATER WATER WATER!" The cool thing is that you can stand behind the water table because all the action is in front of it.
This is why the water people wear rain coats.

Oops, this series is backward. Should have started with the one below.

It's amazing to me how uniform the angle of lean is among the runners.
Below, the cups pile up. See what that girl has in her hand? It's a tub of Vaseline with sticks in it. I saw a few people rubbing them under their arm pits. I guess after a while some chaffing happens.
That's a medical tent on the right.
This must mean it's exactly 12 miles from Staten Island to the Greenpoint/Williamsburg border.
I'd hoped the one below would show the circus about Lance Armstrong (see him there under the microphone?) but I'm not sure it does.
This guy runs the whole thing backward.
Tsk, Dom and Xavier, please report to the principal's office. Actually, a few people, women too, pulled over on our street to pee (the women squatted between cars). I guess as the larger group passed through the line for the port-o-johns got really long.
They're on a mission from God. (I wasn't trying to take a picture of them leering at girls, it just happened that way.)

Location: Teddy's

I'm pretty sure this is part of a production called p.s. i love you which has some great names in the cast. I took this picture yesterday and this morning it's clear that this movie shoot is going to take over half of Northside. There are signs running from North 7 to North 13 along Berry and on the side streets. This morning they were working on building a wall around Teddy's, presumably to control the lighting. If I'm going to be stepping over cables for a week, I better get a good celebrity sighting out of it.
(Even though Teddy's is the place I've eaten at most, other than the diner, since moving here in July, I think I've only taken this one photo of the inside.
Update: The above mentioned parking signs:
