Probably the last word on the Empire Candy building other than actually eating there.
http://testofwill.blogspot.com/2007/04/something-happening-in-empire-candy-for.html

I had heard from one of the roofers that this would be a restaurant but I wanted to get a shot of the proof on the permit. There were people inside while I was snapping the permit and a guy came out and asked if he could help me with something. I assured him that I was only photoblogging (ug, I can't believe I said that out loud) and was excited to see a new place coming in.

It's going to be an Austro-Hungarian beer hall with restaurant in the back. The space is huge, so they're still a couple months away from opening. The guy was kind enough to also give me a card for a free drink. See the card in this stream and let me know what you think the name of the place is. He was also cool enough to let me take a shot of construction. No sneaking.

Greenpoint Ave between Manhattan Ave and Franklin Ave. It doesn't have the usual "cooking equipment" line in the permit but I poked my head in the door and it's a nearly finished nice looking bar. There was a couple (or a guy and a gal) inside who were very nice and they even gave me free drink token- a little wooden disc with a rabbit and the word "black" on it. Looking forward to this one in about a month.

Singing Subaru Guy
If you've been outside in Williamsburg on a nice day you know who Singing Subaru Guy is. He drives around blasting oldies and singing at the top of his voice. I wanted to ask him his name so I could shout hello but he seemed to get bashful when he saw me taking his picture. That struck me as a little odd given the spectacle he makes of himself, but OK.

I was shocked to read that this place is closing/moving in August (http://www.brooklynrecord.com/archives/2007/05/bye_bye_read_cafe.html). I thought it did a really good business. There are always people in here. I didn't even plan to post these photos but just in case I don't get a chance to take better ones before it closes I thought I'd put them up.

Clover

070513 020
Interesting color balance challenge here. The wall is reflecting some red on the pavement making the whole picture look a little too red. I was tempted to try to fix it, but then, that's how it really looked. It's not a bad light setting on the camera, it's that there's a huge red wall reflecting some light.

Facade

070428 050
I'm not sure how well you can tell what this is, but I always thought it was a peculiarity before it was in this current state of half-demolished. It used to look like a building but the face was only a few feet deep before it opened into a parking garage. Now it looks like they wiped out the garage so there's just a building face floating there.

This is way downtown near the Sea Port. I guess Pearl Street?

Is there anything more exciting than a freshly papered, nearly open storefront? Well, maybe, but still it's fun to anticipate. This is on Berry near Metropolitan, next to The Levy. They've been working on it for a while. I remember when they put the floor in. The inside is nearly done construction-wise, but there's no furniture or appliances that would hint at what it's going to be.

That Seattle gloom

070507 020

070507 024

Adding up

070428 017

070428 019
This is from Metropolitan across the lot that was the Dutch Mustard building. I was reading recently about the trend to add stuff to the tops of buildings and this what came to mind. I'll be interested to see if it matches or if it'll look like two buildings stacked on top of each other. What strikes me as odd is that if you look at the second photo it looks like the two pieces on the bottom of the addition are not the same thickness. Is the base building not level?

070502a 005

070502a 004
This is on Manhattan Ave, taken with the point'n'shoot. The lesson here is that the camera has three different ways it can measure the light. Overall average, center weighted average or spot. Change your setting to spot and point it at the brightest light. Keep the button half pressed so the setting stays and then frame your shot. I still used a parking meter for help because the shutter is going to stay open for a while.

Toll Advantage Day!

070428 006
How does this work in the mind of marketers? People walking down the street will be so interested in getting "an advantage" that they'll follow this sign and end up buying a condo that isn't built yet? Hey, did you see it's Toll Advantage Day? We gotta get into that!

070428 015
This is where you end up when you follow the signs. It's almost silly to post any photos of this building since everyone within a couple miles has been able to see it slowly rise into the sky, but I thought it was interesting to see it suddenly sprout balconies the other day (or did I just not notice?). It's almost at full height now and the shape at the top appears to be a little different.

I still can't get over how graphic the destruction/demolition is for the new Fulton St. transit hub. I guess I'm used to seeing a plywood fence go up and behind it just a flat lot of broken bricks. Leaving up the shells and exposing the basements seems so graphic and dramatic. Remember right after 9/11 when the jeans place decided to preserve its dust-covered window display as a reminder? And what a controversy it was - particularly with the folks who wanted to clean up and move on? That place now looks like a plane hit it directly. The top picture here is what's left of the pizza place that was almost at the corner of Broadway and Fulton.
